ETA & ControlScan Release New Data on POS Decisions

ETA, together with ControlScan, a trusted security and compliance partner to the payments industry, has released new payments research data on point-of-sale (POS) technology adoption by small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs).
The ControlScan-ETA POS Technology Adoption survey analyzed the opinions of 250 American SMBs and revealed that consumors’ payments preferences are the driving force behind POS adoption decisions among merchants, with a quarter of respondents saying, “If our customers want it, we’ll make it happen.”
“It’s very meaningful that 25 percent of survey respondents said their payment technology decisions are consumer driven,” said Chris Bucolo, Director of Market Strategy, ControlScan. “This signals a shift away from cost being the single most important factor in the SMB’s payment technology purchase.”
While cost did rank among merchants’ many considerations, data security was cited by 89 percent as a top concern; the top three factors that indicated a successful POS device were “improved transaction security,” “improved customer experience,” and “ease of implementation.”
An early release of key findings from the ControlScan-ETA POS Technology Adoption survey was provided to attendees of ETA TRANSACT Tech in San Francisco on Nov. 10 during a panel highlighting merchant perspectives on POS technology. During the data-driven conversation, panelists representing a parking management company, a professional services firm and a retail technology developer echoed the survey finding that the consumer heavily influences POS tech adoption in the SMB space.
