U.S. First Quarter E-Retail Spending Rose 13 Percent

Online sales rose 13 percent in 2013’s first quarter to $56.01 billion, according to comScore, which also reported that mobile commerce sales totaled $5.9 billion. ComScore’s Andrew Lipsman says retail purchasing on tablets and smartphones is growing at about twice the rate of buying via personal computers. Consumers diverted 10.6 percent of their discretionary spending to online retailers, the highest percentage to date. ComScore also reports that U.S. consumers spent nearly half of their time shopping the Web using mobile devices. They browsed 34 percent of the time on smartphones and 14 percent of the time on tablets. The payroll tax increase has impacted spending. “That said, as long as job growth continues and consumer sentiment remains positive, the outlook for e-commerce in 2013 remains bright,” says comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni.
