Report: Seven in Ten US Consumers Use Buy Online, Pickup In-Store

Sixty-eight percent of US consumers have adopted buy online, pickup in-store (BOPIS) shopping, making multiple “click-and-collect” purchases, according to an analysis from Business Insider Intelligence.
Savings on shipping costs, speedier commerce and elevated convenience were the primary reasons consumers cited for their significant adoption of BOPIS services at retailers in the United States, the report found. Forty-eight percent of consumers cited savings on shipping costs as the most popular reason for using BOPIS, 39 percent cited speed and 28 percent cited convenience, suggesting that consumers see BOPIS as a fast and efficient means to fitting ecommerce into their schedule.
In fact, the analysis found that 50 percent of shoppers have decided where to buy products online based on whether BOPIS was an option at the retailer. And the service is a worthy investment to get consumers in the door, the report suggested. An impressive 85 percent of shoppers say that they’ve made an additional in-store purchase while picking up an online order; 15 percent say that they do so with frequency.
BOPIS also could be a lucrative service to integrate into existing rewards programs, the report said. Access to additional deals and savings is the top incentive that would cause them to use BOPIS more, the report said.
