Report: Mobile Devices Account for Over a Third of Cyber Monday Sales
11-27-2018
Cyber Monday 2018 saw nearly $8 billion in online sales, with over a third of them made on mobile devices, new data from Adobe says. The firm, which tracks transactions across the major retailers online in the US, projects that Cyber Monday drove $7.9 billion in online sales, including 36 percent – or $2.83 billion – made via mobile devices.
The numbers represent significant year-over-year growth for e-commerce on Cyber Monday, with total sales increasing 19.3 percent over 2017’s $6.6 billion. Mobile devices, primarily smartphones, drove plenty of conversions. Purchases made via smartphones alone accounted for $2.2 billion in sales, or 27.7 percent of sales, on Cyber Monday.
Since the start of the holiday shopping season, Adobe says, sales made on smartphones have grown 43 percent year-over-year. Close to 55 percent of visits to retail sites came via mobile devices as well, and Adobe predicts that as a result retailers can increase their total holiday season revenue by 7.2 percent if mobile checkout is made easier. Adobe says that moves from cart to order – the final step in the online shopping experience – happen 20 percent less often on smartphones compared to desktop, a $9 billion potential increase in revenue if mobile checkout friction is reduced.
The ecommerce boom this holiday season has so far totaled $58.52 billion in consumer spending since November 1st, outpacing last year by $8.4 billion and surpassing Adobe’s prediction of $57.2 billion by nearly a billion dollars.
Cyber Monday comes after the another strong Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, the TechCrunch reported. Online sales in the US hit $6.2 billion on Black Friday, Adobe says, with over a third coming from mobile devices. Small Business Saturday saw a 25.5 percent increase in online says, according to Adobe, up to $3.02 billion this year.
Adobe’s predictions are derived from an analysis of transactions at 80 percent of the biggest retailers online in the US, Adobe says. Click here to read more.
