Isis Gears Up for National Launch Despite Challenges Ahead

Isis is hoping for a nationwide launch of its NFC-enabled Isis Mobile Wallet this year, and has been in discussions with key U.S. banks and merchants. Sources say Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility, and T-Mobile USA expect a commercial launch to be delayed until the fall, potentially in the fourth quarter, rather than in summer as anticipated. They say the mobile operators have been ordering NFC SIM cards or are planning to do so in large quantities, much more than they need for the two cities now in tests. Collectively, the companies have certified more than 30 NFC phone models to work with the Isis SIMs, including major Android handsets. The companies reportedly are developing new wallet apps for both the BlackBerry and iOS platforms. Most sources expect the Isis rollout to be affected by the need to select cities with an adequate number of contactless point of sale terminals, which are primarily present in quick-service establishments, such as fast food restaurants, convenience stores, and gas station retailers. Isis reportedly is working out deals with certain merchants to support its U.S. expansion that will likely feature the SmartTap mobile-commerce platform.
