ETA Hosts Payments Innovation Day on Capitol Hill
December 3, 2013 – Educating legislators and regulators on mobile payments innovation was the agenda today at ETA’s Payments Innovation Day held on Capitol Hill. The standing room only event featured a panel of industry experts who discussed new technologies that are creating more convenient, secure and rewarding payment options for consumers.
The panel, entitled How Mobile Payments are Accelerating Commerce, took place today at 12:00pm in the Rayburn House Office Building. Following opening remarks from ETA CEO Jason Oxman, Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) spoke about the importance of innovation in financial services. Chairman Capito is a leader on the House Financial Services Committee, serving as the Chair for the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, so she is well aware of the issues ETA members face. During her remarks, she repeatedly stressed the importance of creating a regulatory environment that facilitates the advancements necessary to ensure continued momentum in mobile payments.
The panel, moderated by Nela Richardson, Senior Economist, Bloomberg Government, included Jay Hansen, Counsel, Intuit, Tom Gannon, VP Public Policy, MasterCard, Ali Gabel, Manager of Government Affairs, PayPal and Jackie Moran, VP Information Technology and Services, Verizon. These leaders in mobile commerce educated the audience of hill staffers and ETA members about new innovations driving this vital segment of the economy.
Among the notable predictions and observations voiced at the meeting were the following:
- One of the biggest issues ahead for the payments industry as a whole is increased government regulation
- Consumer adoption of mobile payments will continue to accelerate
- Privacy and security are important to everyone in the payments ecosystem
In addition to the briefing, the day included meetings with members of Congress and high-level government officials. For more information about ETA’s advocacy activities, contact Jaime Graham, Senior Government Relations Manager, at [email protected] or 202-677-7409.
