Cover App Designed to Ease Restaurant Payments

An new app from the startup Cover aims to ease electronic payments at restaurants through an integrated payment experience, according to Cover founder Andrew Cove. The diner notifies the server that he will be paying with Cover and gives his name, and the Cover app guesses the diner is at the same restaurant, which the diner verifies on his smartphone. The diner then leaves when he is done eating, and there is no wait for a check, no gratuity calculation, and no need to ensure signing of the merchant copy of the receipt, which is transmitted by email to the customer’s phone. A tip is automatically included as a default-set percentage. Cover, which is downloadable for iOS and Android, is only initially available in 105 restaurants in San Francisco and New York City. Customers enter credit card data and other basic information when they sign up for Cover, so they can pay for meals without ever taking out cash or a credit card.
