Biometrics Eyed for Secure Future Mobile Payments

Payment experts emphasized biometrics as a likely future payment authentication technology at the recent Biometrics Institute Asia Pacific Conference. Kiwibank’s Tony Eyles says biometrics offers a better experience for customers while also bolstering security, while the Australian Payments Clearing Association’s Arun Kendall expects older users to be more resistant to biometric security than others. Panelists appeared most optimistic on fingerprint authentication becoming popular for users, with Kendall citing the incorporation of a fingerprint scanner into the most recent Apple iPhone as “the way forward” for future secure electronic payments. The Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks’ Santiago Uriel Arias says PayPal’s fingerprint-scanning app for the Samsung Galaxy Gear II smart watch could serve as a template for large financial institutions. Kendall stresses the importance of security standards being universally applicable to companies, while the ideal payments system also needs interoperability, simplicity, mobility, speed, and accuracy.
