…As U.S. E-Commerce Jumps in the Third Quarter

U.S. consumers spent $46.5 billion at e-retailers in the third quarter, up 14.6 percent from the previous third quarter, according to comScore. Although e-commerce spending is up overall, comScore notes it is increasingly shifting away from desktop purchases to purchases made on mobile devices. The third quarter in both 2013 and 2012 saw online spending from desktop computers shrink compared to the previous quarter, but the share of purchases made from mobile devices has increased year-over-year. ComScore estimates that $5.8 billion, or 10.9 percent, of third-quarter sales were placed using a mobile device, up from $4.6 billion, or 9.9 percent, last year. Smartphones accounted for the majority of mobile purchases compared to tablets. Internet Retailer projects that mobile retail commerce will grow by 63 percent in 2013 to $34.17 billion, up from $20.95 billion in 2012. “We are confident that the growth rate in online spending will once again far exceed that in bricks-and-mortar stores [this holiday season], reflecting the ongoing channel shift to e-commerce,” says comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni.
