Vein Pattern Scanning Enables Device-Free Instant Payments

Quixter, a mobile payment solution invented by a student at Lund University, enables consumers to leave their wallets and mobile phones at home and make purchases with only their palms. Quixter scans the unique vein pattern in a person’s palm and requires only a phone number, social security number, and bank account to set up payments. More than 1,600 people have signed up to use the solution at 15 stores and restaurants near the university. Shoppers simply place their hand in a plastic cradle and key in the last four digits of their phone number—a step that is irrelevant but gives them time to take note of the price—to complete a transaction in under five seconds. The purchases are tallied on an invoice, and the amount is deducted from the user’s bank account twice per month. New Jersey-based Biyo also is developing tools that involve palm scanning, which, along with face and iris recognition, is among the fastest-growing biometric technologies, according to Transparency Market Research.
