Subway Testing Mobile Ordering and Payment System

About 2,000 California-based Subway restaurants have been testing mobile ordering and payment services. The Subway app has been available to locations throughout California since last March, and about 400,000 customers have downloaded it. The goal was to create an app that would replicate the experience guests have in stores with Subway’s highly customizable menu, says Subway franchisee and app developer ZippyYum owner Daniel Riscalla. The app also recognizes differences within each unit, as not all locations use the same ingredients. In addition, the app enables customers to link their account to a credit card for prepayment. Riscalla estimates that about 15 percent of his sales come from mobile orders, and overall sales have improved because of faster throughput and improved order accuracy. Subway corporate also is working with Paydiant to develop a payment system that could be rolled out system-wide.
