Security, PCI Compliance Remain Challenges for Retailers

Retailers can continue to expect rapid increases in security costs if they lack sufficient controls to manage store systems and the growing number and variety of devices, according to a McAfee/IHL Group study. The study said security must evolve, often much faster than the devices requiring protection. A poll of senior retail and hospitality executives on their tactics to meet PCI compliance and security for their retail systems found a close connection between security confidence and in-store device variability. IHL president Greg Buzek notes that customers’ desire for a seamless, positive shopping experience remains constant, and he says “when done right, the introduction of mobile devices within the store can help enhance the customer experience but [it] comes with expanded risks.” The McAfee/IHL study determined that more and more types of devices are sharing information, and the need for wireless in-store data sharing also is expanding while data breaches and more advanced threats are becoming more challenging. Although merchants have a good understanding of PCI compliance, growth in the amount and diversity of store systems causes difficulty in providing appropriate security and compliance management, the study found.
