Mobile POS Systems to Triple Among Retailers by 2018
The number of retailers that use mobile checkout systems will triple between now and 2018, according to an Infogroup survey. More than half of 100 polled retail executives said they planned to adopt mobile checkout systems—including payment card readers plugged into tablet computers and NFC devices that allow consumers to make purchases—over the next five years. About 26 percent of retailers currently use mobile checkout systems, while 23 percent of respondents had no interest whatsoever in mobile checkout systems. Infogroup’s Don Patrick says those retailers will be missing out on an opportunity to collect valuable information about consumer spending habits and other data. But he also points out that even retailers that have adopted mobile checkout systems sometimes fail to leverage the data the technology can provide because they are finding it difficult to use the data they already have. Patrick says retailers need to invest in analytics to maximize the return on their investment in mobile checkout systems and to improve the customer experience.
