Mobile Payments Index Finds Increase in Mobile Transaction Volume And Value
February 5, 2014 – Adyen, an international and omni-channel payment solutions provider, announced the results of its third Ayden Mobile Payments Index, based on Ayden global payment transaction data collected from September to December 2013. Ayden processes payments for more than 3,500 primarily multi-national organizations. For 2013, the company said it processed more than $14 billion in payments transactions of which $2.2 billion were mobile transactions.
The study measured transaction volume per type of mobile device and average transaction value in five industries: travel, gaming, retail, ticketing and digital goods. For the travel industry nearly 30% of all transactions were made over smartphone or tablet. Mobile transaction volume was up to 23% for retail, 20% for ticketing, 18% for digital goods payments and 12% for gaming.
Transactions via tablet showed higher average value, although, more transaction volume took place via smartphone, apart from in the retail sector. According to Ayden, the likelihood for high-value purchases to be made via tablet could reflect a longer discernment period and desire for an enjoyable browsing experience versus the spontaneity of low value purchases.
Notably, Ayden said that for the month of December alone overall mobile payments were up 55% over last year. While the study showed that Android has steadily been achieving a larger share of mobile transactions, at present Apple devices remain dominant with 41 percent of mobile transactions made via iPad and roughly 32 percent of transactions made using iPhones.
