Retail mobile commerce is on track to comprise 46.6 percent of e-commerce sales in 2018 for a total of $626 billion, up from $204 billion in 2014, according to Goldman Sachs. The forecast also predicts that 535 million consumers worldwide will make a purchase on their mobile devices this year, a number that will climb to 1.09 billion in 2018. Goldman Sachs’ m-commerce projections and United Nations’ population projections envision 14.4 percent of the 7.56 billion people in the world making at least one purchase on a mobile device in 2018. Goldman Sachs’ projected m-commerce sales on smartphones for 2018 is estimated to be $173 billion, while the smartphone percentage of mobile sales is expected to total 27.6 percent. Likewise, tablet-based m-commerce sales are anticipated to total $453 billion in 2018, with 72.4 percent of mobile sales conducted on tablets.
