Mobile Commerce Sales Jump 81 Percent in 2012
U.S. mobile commerce sales posted a strong increase last year and more double-digit increases are expected in the years to come, according to eMarketer. M-commerce sales rose 81 percent between 2011 and 2012, increasing from $13.63 billion in 2011 to $24.66 billion in 2012. More than 10 percent of last year’s mobile commerce sales were made using smartphones or tablets, eMarketer reports. EMarketer notes that m-commerce sales are expected to rise 55.7 percent this year, 35.8 percent in 2014, and 30.9 percent in 2015. The percentage of m-commerce transactions made with smartphones and tablets is expected to rise as well, increasing from 15 percent this year to 24 percent by 2016. EMarketer attributes the growing popularity of m-commerce to several factors, including the immediacy of being able to make a purchase with a smartphone as well as the increasing tendency of tablet users to utilize their devices to buy goods and services.
