Many Holiday Shoppers Expected on Thanksgiving Day
Many holiday shoppers are expected to extend their Thanksgiving weekend shopping to Turkey Day itself, according to a National Retail Federation survey. NRF surveyed more than 6,000 U.S. consumers in early November and found that of those planning to shop over the Thanksgiving weekend, 23.6 percent expect to shop on Thanksgiving Day. This is good news for retailers who are facing a much shorter holiday shopping season with fewer weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Several major retailers, including Macy’s and Wal-Mart are planning to open their stores to shoppers on Thanksgiving Day, while others, including Costco and Nordstrom, have said they will keep their stores closed until Black Friday. An earlier survey by Shop.org found that more than half of online retailers plan to offer sales on Thanksgiving Day. However, the NRF survey shows that Black Friday is still going to be the major shopping day, with 69.3 percent of shoppers saying they will shop that day, compared to 43.6 percent for Saturday, and 24.2 percent for Sunday.
