Holiday E-Commerce Off to Strong Start

The holiday e-commerce season is off to a strong start, with comScore reporting that online sales made from PCs were up 14 percent from Nov. 1-24 compared to the same period last year. ComScore estimates that U.S. consumers using PCs purchased $18.9 billion during those weeks, up from $16.6 billion in 2012. ComScore forecasts a 14.1 percent year-over-year gain in desktop e-retail purchases to $48.1 billion during November and December 2013, and it also expects consumers buying on smartphones and tablets to spend $7.1 billion, constituting 13 percent of total digital commerce. Spending across digital channels is projected to total $55.2 billion for the season. “Our forecast of 14 percent growth for desktop-based buying…represents a strong outlook versus last year that highlights the continued channel shift to online,” says comScore’s Andrew Lipsman. “We also expect m-commerce spending growth to contribute about 2 percentage points to that growth rate, meaning that total digital commerce will grow at a rate of nearly 16 percent.” Meanwhile, all shopping channels tracked by ChannelAdvisor exhibited at least double-digit growth over the weekend before Thanksgiving last year.
