Heartland Payments Invests $20M in Leaf Mobile Platform
Heartland Payment Systems announced that it has invested $20 million in Cambridge, Mass.-based Leaf, which is developing a mobile commerce platform that enables merchants to choose the processing services provider, as well as vertical-specific point of sale applications from various players in the industry. The funding will enable Leaf to capitalize on rapidly shifting trends in the retail and hospitality markets, according to Heartland. Leaf’s technology is quickly adapting to the mobile devices that consumers are increasingly using to conduct business, says Heartland’s David Gilbert. Leaf also is manufacturing a cloud-based, business-oriented tablet called the LeafPresenter, which includes a magnetic stripe card, front- and rear-facing cameras, and other technology to facilitate payments. Leaf and Heartland believe small merchants need the flexibility of an open platform and that the trend will drive future technology.
