Gamers Leaving Credit Cards Behind for Alternate Payment Methods
There is a worldwide trend of video gamers increasingly employing alternative payment methods to purchase games rather than credit or debit cards, according to a WorldPlay study. The study determined that “alternative payment methods are used by 51 percent of video gamers across the globe, compared to 46 percent that use credit and debit cards.” WorldPlay says the boost in alternative payment usage has been largely fueled by digital wallets, which constituted 27 percent of overall transactions, while the highest users of alternatives are consumers in emerging markets such as Russia and China. “Increasingly consumers are choosing e-wallets to make purchases with the perception that this method is more secure, reliable and efficient than credit or debit cards,” notes WorldPlay’s Colin Murray. WorldPlay sees a growing trend surrounding app-based transactions, especially in South Korea with 44 percent, the United States with about 26 percent, Russia with 26 percent, and India with 37 percent, all leading the purchases of app-based games. The study found that payment techniques and options are still mainly driven by convenience and safety, as 72 percent of respondents want to save payment details for faster future purchases and 80 percent generally use the same payment method for all types of content.
