ETA Applauds Canada’s Approval of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement

Washington, D.C. – March 17, 2020 – The Electronic Transactions Association (ETA), the global trade association for the payments technology and merchant acquiring industry, applauds the leadership of Canada’s Parliament for adopting the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) earlier this month.

“ETA commends Canada’s Parliament for the passage of CUSMA, particularly during a time of global uncertainty,” said Jodie Kelley, CEO of ETA. “We are confident that this important new trade agreement will strengthen cross-border digital trade and help payments technology companies supply products and services that promote engagement with the digital economy.”

By establishing modern, predictable trade rules for payments companies that reflect the growing importance of data, technology and innovation, the CUSMA will provide a boost to the North American economy. The CUSMA also strikes the right balance on consumer privacy principles. It recognizes that consumers’ privacy should be protected no matter where an individual or business is located, while also promoting flexible but strong privacy laws and cybersecurity standards that protect data without prohibiting its movement across borders.
