E-Commerce Holiday Sales Set for Double-Digit Growth

September 25, 2014 –  Online sales and mail orders will top all other retail sales in the coming holiday season as well as exceed last year’s holiday e-commerce sales, according to Deloitte. Deloitte predicts total retail sales will see 4 percent to 4.5 percent growth this season, and 13.5 percent to 14 percent growth for online/mail order purchases. Moreover, Deloitte forecasts 50 percent of all retail store sales will be influenced by digital interactions through both virtual and physical store channels.

“Our research indicates that 84 percent of shoppers use digital tools before and during their trip to a store,” says Deloitte’s Alison Paul in their press release. “Additionally, those shoppers convert, or make a purchase, at a 40 percent higher rate than those who do not use such devices during their shopping journey.” Economic factors Deloitte’s Daniel Bachman credits for the anticipated e-commerce sales gains include positive growth in income, salary, and employment. ComScore estimates consumers spent at least $46 billion with e-tailers during the 2013 holiday season, a nearly 10.1 percent increase from $42 billion in 2012. Deloitte predicts total holiday sales of $981 billion to $986 billion in 2014.
