Cyber Monday Shatters the Online Spending Record

Online shoppers spent a record-breaking $2.29 billion on Cyber Monday, with 18.3 percent of online sales done on mobile devices, according to Adobe Systems, which represents 80 percent growth in m-commerce sales compared to last year’s Cyber Monday. Factors that may have helped drive growth include merchants’ increasing use of push notifications. Adobe also cites social networks as a significant factor in pushing consumers to merchant websites, noting that shoppers who clicked directly from social networks to retailer sites spent $148 million online. Meanwhile, IBM says shoppers who clicked from Facebook were the most valuable, with an average order of $97.81. IBM estimates that online sales on Cyber Monday experienced year-over-year growth of 20.6 percent, with mobile sales accounting for 17 percent of total sales. “We continue to see a dramatic movement of the new digitally savvy consumer as Cyber Monday once again proved to be the star of this holiday shopping season,” says IBM’s Jay Henderson. ChannelAdvisor CEO Scot Wingo observes that Cyber Monday shopping now extends throughout the day rather than being concentrated mainly during work hours.
