Cross-Border Shoppers Prefer U.S. E-Commerce Sites

A recent survey sponsored by PayPal found that cross-border shoppers in many countries prefer making purchases from U.S.-based online retailers instead of from e-tailers based in other countries. Of the more than 6,000 cross-border shoppers in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, and Brazil who took part in the survey, 45 percent said they purchased goods from online retailers in the United States. That finding indicates that online U.S. retailers that are not set up to handle cross-border shoppers may be missing out on sales. Online retailers based in the UK, China, and Hong Kong were the next most popular destinations, the survey found. The survey also found that cross-border shopping is becoming increasingly popular among consumers in the countries surveyed. Nearly 94 million consumers in those countries will purchase $105 billion worth of goods from online retailers in other countries this year. By 2018, 130 million online shoppers in the six countries surveyed will make $307 billion in cross-border online purchases.
