Criminals Target E-Commerce for Cardholder Data

E-commerce websites were the leading target last year for criminals looking for cardholder and other personal information that could be exploited for fraud, according to Trustwave’s 2013 Global Security Report. The study found that e-commerce sites constituted 48 percent of targeted systems in 2012, while point of sale and payment-processing systems accounted for 47 percent, data centers and corporate infrastructure 4 percent, and ATMs 1 percent. The report was based on more than 450 data breach probes performed by Trustwave in 19 countries. Romania was the country of origin for the largest percentage of attacks, followed by the United States, which also accounted for the largest percentage of breach victims. Trustwave found that 96 percent of data breaches sought to compromise payment card data. The majority of the analyzed breaches were focused on the retail industry, followed by the food and beverage sector, the hospitality industry, financial services, and nonprofits.
