Consumers Will Spend 4 Percent More on Gift Cards This Year

 Consumers are expected to spend about 4 percent more on gift cards this year for an average of $163.16, up from $156.86 last year, according to the National Retail Federation’s Gift Card Spending Survey. The poll found that 80.6 percent of consumers said they will purchase at least one gift card this holiday season, while 12.7 percent of shoppers plan to buy gift cards online. Average spending per gift card will climb 3.2 percent, for a year-over-year increase from $43.75 to $45.16. Meanwhile, the percentage of gift card buyers giving gift cards for a coffee shop will increase from 13 percent in 2009 to 19 percent for the 2013 holiday season. CEB TowerGroup estimates that U.S. consumers loaded $110 billion onto gift cards last year, with about $36 billion of that sum for retailer-specific gift cards.
