Apple Reportedly Intensifying Its Mobile Payments Push

Apple is interviewing candidates for two new executive positions overseeing the development of a payments service that would leverage the payment information already available through Apple customers’ iTunes accounts. Apple’s Jennifer Bailey is leading the initiative and interviewing candidates for the new head of product and head of business development positions. Apple has previously indicated its interest in the online and in-store payments space. It was reported in January the company was examining possible ways of leveraging iTunes payment information for both online and in-store purchases. PayPal has reportedly been in talks with Apple for months about a possible partnership and Apple is said to have been considering acquiring Square. During the company’s most recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated the company’s interest in payments and hinted the company was beginning to coalesce around Touch ID, the biometric fingerprint identification technology that Apple included in its latest version of the iPhone.
